Reducing food waste in store

In an ideal world, we wouldn't have any food waste in our stores. Here are a few of the things we are doing to work towards that.

A date with dates

We have a specially trained 'Date Team' that reviews dates, products and how things are selling in each store. From this, we can calculate the right stock for the right place at the right time.

Fresh and tasty

We’re reviewing packaging across our product lines to make sure it protects food and keeps it fresh. We also maximise selling time by reducing the price of products on the day of ‘use by’. This makes sure that as much food as possible is sold and not wasted. We like to call it ‘whoops’.

Weather watch

We constantly monitor the weather as this has a big impact on what customers buy and eat. We've discovered that we sell fewer pre-packed sandwiches when it's raining. So, we keep an eye on the weather forecast and order appropriately.

Loving labels

We’re continuing to bring in clearer labelling to avoid confusion both in-store and at home and ensure as much of our produce is sold and eaten as possible. Have a look at the handy guide that explains what each date label means.
